Pop culture as religion: Lady Gaga explains the controversial biblical imagery in her upcoming music video "Judas"

By Kevin Ritchie MSN

Next week Lady Gaga will premiere a Federico Fellini-esque music video for her new single "Judas," a song that has predictably rankled Catholic groups with its hard-edged appropriation of the biblical story of Jesus' betrayer as a metaphor for falling for the wrong man. In the video, which she co-directed with Canadian choreographer Laurieann Gibson, Gaga will star as the prostitute Mary Magdalene leading a motorcycle gang of apostles on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

In a brief and slightly philosophical phone interview with MSN before her concert at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Monday, the singer insisted the video is an affirmation of faith, not a challenge to it. The subject of faith will also be a major theme on her third album, "Born This Way," which she says is now finished and ready for its May 23rd release date, and her forthcoming tour to support it.

Lady Gaga's 'Judas' Video To Premiere On 'American Idol'

By Jocelyn Vena MTV News
Interscope Records announces clip coming 'the week of May 2.'
Let the cultural baptism begin, little monsters. Lady Gaga is set to release her "Judas" video the week of May 2 on "American Idol." Interscope Records made the announcement on its Twitter account, adding that more details would be on the way.

The video was co-directed by Mother Monster and her creative director, Laurieann Gibson. And, Gibson has made it clear that this video will have everyone talking.

"It's a phenomenal video: really powerful, really impactful," Gibson commented. "She's such a strong, committed artist. Her loyalty to me is something I will be forever grateful for. We're spiritually connected.

"We need each other ... and 'Judas' is ultimately a representation of our true bond."

Gaga will play Mary Magdalene, with Norman Reedus as Judas.

"I will tell you now, first off, I'm Christian, and my career is evidence of God in my life," Gibson said. "And I think that most people are already thinking that Gaga and the blasphemy and they're premeditating the approach, and I think they'll be very shocked to find out how huge and really groundbreaking the message is and how freeing the message is for all the right reasons. And it's really going to shock the world."

For those who can't wait that long, Gaga is set to perform the track on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Wednesday. It's not the only TV performance Gaga has lined up to get her fans excited for the May 23 release of Born This Way: Last week, it was announced that Gaga would perform on the May 21 episode of "Saturday Night Live," hosted by Justin Timberlake.

She'll also make a May 27 appearance on "Good Morning America" that will kick off the show's summer concert series, and the premiere of Gaga's highly anticipated HBO special, which was taped at New York's Madison Square Garden in February, will be May 7.

"JUDAS is about forgiveness and perseverance through struggle," Gaga tweeted on Easter Sunday. "Persevere today!"

Lady Gaga Saturday Night Live

by Amber Katz, MTV
What goes around comes around! He hasn't hosted "Saturday Night Live" since May 9, 2009, but guess who's bringing "Sexy Back" to the sketch comedy show for its season finale on May 21? Justin Timberlake, that's who! The newly single actor/singer will return to "Saturday Night Live"'s hallowed set for the fourth time.

"The Social Network" star is just as well known for his partnership with object of our desire Andy Samberg on "D*** In A Box," "Single Ladies," and "Mother Lover." We especially adore JT's cameo in "Jizz in my Pants" as the disapproving janitor mopping up aisle 3 when Jorma Taccone "needed a few things from the grocery" and wound up getting far too aroused by the checkout girl Jamie Lynn Siegler while "paying by check."

We imagine Justin Timberlake will likely be promoting his upcoming flick Friends With Benefits starring Mila Kunis pretty hard on the show, but we can handle a little of that in exchange for some of his hilarious improv and musical shorts. We anticipate his success on the finale leading to his achieving the ever-prestigious "five timer" SNL status in the coming season. "SNL," we know this "just can't be summer love." You'll see.
And as if that weren't enough to constitute some serious must-see TV, Lady Gaga has been confirmed as the musical guest for the same show. She last appeared on "Saturday Night Live" in 2009. Not to state the totally obvious, but this is an A-list "SNL" dream team. Set your DVRs, Buzzworthy readers!

Lady Gaga: 'If you want me to be a manufactured act you can fuck off'

'Judas' singer comes out fighting in 'NME' interview. (NME)
Lady Gaga has attacked critics who say she is manufactured, telling NME they can "fuck off".

In an interview you can read in full in this week's magazine,
available to buy online now (April 19) and in shops nationwide, the singer spoke out about people who wrongly assume she employs songwriters to pen her hits.

"If you want me to be a manufactured act, you can fuck off, " she stated about the accusations.

Elsewhere in the interview, Lady Gaga compared herself to John Lennon by saying that she struggles to ever be completely happy with her songs.

"I am perpetually unhappy with what I create," she said. "Even though I might tell you that 'Edge Of Glory' is a pop masterpiece, when it's all said and finished there will be things I dread, and every time I listen to it I'll hear them."

Gaga added: "In John Lennon's [1980] Playboy interview he talked about how he hated certain songs because of the way they were finished. And they might be my favourite songs, but Lennon couldn't listen to them."

Coachella 2011: Is Bono correct that the Scissor Sisters are 'the best pop group in the world'?

Pop & Hiss

The L.A. Times music blog

In the week leading up to the Friday kickoff of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Pop & Hiss offers a preview of some of this year's less established or under-appreciated artists.
Who: Scissor Sisters
When: Saturday, April 16
From: New York City

If you've stopped giggling at the innuendo within their moniker long enough to press play on any Scissor Sisters record, you'd know that the New York-based band is all about having a raucous, dirty, sexy, good time -– making them an appropriate fit for the party in the desert.
The New Yorkers defy both genre and gender with their mix of glam rock, disco and pop; you can hear the sounds of Madonna, Queen, ABBA and Duran Duran within the band's DNA.
Though they aren't marquee acts in the States, the Sisters have scooped up some pretty major co-signs in their career, including a collaboration with Elton John (who co-wrote their breakout single, "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'"), their 2004 self-titled debut being named one of the "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die," an opening gig with Lady Gaga on the current leg of her Monster Ball Tour, and Bono deeming them "the best pop group in the world."
Scissor Sisters' live offering is a mash-up of burlesque, a drag show and underground discotheque. Lead man Jake Shears, a former go-go stripper, takes a less-is-more approach with his costume (his outfit during the Los Angeles Monster Ball stop consisted of leather chaps, tiny leather briefs and a chest barring vest -– which hit the floor), so expect him to squeeze in a tan onstage.

Popjustice: Listening to Lady Gaga's Next Single is an Enjoyable Experience

Pop Justice
In short:  'Judas' is extremely good.

In long:  Imagine a highly evolved, Titanium-plated 'Bad Romance' from the year 2511 travelling half a millennium back in time to save music from a tidal wave of 'in the club'-obsessed pop drivel, and that's 'Judas'. We love this song so much. It's pop in all the right ways, it's noisy in all the right ways, it's brash and bombastic and funny and audacious and stupid in all the right ways, and it's smart in all the right ways, too.
On the surface it's a song about being double-crossed ("even after three times he betrays me"), contemplating revenge ("bring him down, I'll bring him down down, a king with no crown, a king with no crown"), but being repeatedly drawn to awfulness: "I'm just a holy fool but baby oh baby he's so cruel, but I'm still in love with Judas, baby".
Vocally Gaga's in completely new territory (in the verses and pre-chorus she hurls herself into a decadent half-sung, half-rapped Jamaican Patois style), the chorus is a thousand storeys high, there's a demented tribal techno breakdown, and the whole thing is a little bit overwhelming for all the right reasons. Importantly, as a turbo-charged electrogothic wrongness anthem 'Judas' sounds like a lot of fun - like Gaga had fun writing it and like RedOne had a lot of fun producing it. If Abba ever went to the sort of poppers-'n'-fisting Mannheim sex club Jake Shears told us about in 2009 'Judas' is the sort of song they would have come up with. Maybe this is all good news for those of you who felt that the overstudied carefreeness of 'Born This Way' missed its target.
We first heard an early version of 'Judas' last May, the same time we heard that early version of 'Born This Way' and a handful of other tracks that have made the album, and we last heard the track a couple of weeks ago - not the very final mix, apparently, but we were told there would be no major changes. While the sound of 'Born This Way' had changed a lot by the time the single version debuted, the sound of 'Judas' has been industrial, thunderous and frantic throughout.

One of the more recent additions to the song, which has apparently only appeared in the last few weeks, is a middle eight that goes like this: "In the most Biblical sense, I am beyond repentance. 'Fame hooker', 'prostitute wench', 'vomits her mind'... But in the cultural sense I just speak in future tense. Judas kiss me if offenced, or wear an ear condom next time."

You might raise an eyebrow at 'offenced' but remember how "WHAYOURBARROWMANCE" didn't exist until Spring 2009 and these days it's part of all our lives. What does the 'Judas' interlude mean? "It's pretty east to decode," Gaga told us when we asked. "In terms of traditional views of what a woman is supposed to be I'm beyond the ability to redeem myself. But I don't want to redeem myself, because in the cultural sense I believe that I'm just before my time. And if you don't like it, wear an ear condom."

Glee's Lady Gaga-inspired episode gets an extra 30 minutes

By Adam Bryant, TV Guide
Set your DVRs, Little Monsters: Glee's upcoming tribute to Lady Gaga will be a super-sized, 90-minute episode, Fox announced Wednesday.
The show, which featured several Gaga songs in a Season 1 episode, will again pay homage to the pop star on Tuesday, April 26. The episode shares its title with Gaga's current single, "Born This Way," and focuses on Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) as he uses Gaga's music to teach his glee club about self-acceptance, per Fox's news release. (Maybe, this time, the lesson will sink in.) The club will perform "Born This Way" during the episode.
The episode will also center on the story line between Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Karofsky (Max Adler), the gay football player who beats Kurt up instead of coming out of the closet. Quinn (Dianna Agron) will also go toe-to-toe with Lauren (Ashley Fink) for the prom queen crown, Emma (Jayma Mays) confronts her obsessive issues, Rachel (Lea Michele) struggles with a life-altering decision and Santana (Naya Rivera) makes a move that could permanently alter the glee club dynamic.

Gaga eyes television sitcom debut

Lady Gaga wants to appear in Modern Family.

The Born This Way hitmaker is a huge fan of the comedy TV series and has asked producers to write a cameo role for her, though show chiefs are unsure of how to accommodate the eccentric singer.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitchell in the programme, said: "Gaga reached out and she wanted to do something with the show but it's like, how do you incorporate Lady Gaga into Modern Family?"

However, Jesse did reveal that a tribute to the singer has been penned for a forthcoming episode, though she is not scheduled to appear in it.

He explained on morning TV show Live with Regis and Kelly: "We're actually doing a Lady Gaga episode.

Mitchell, my character, wants to go to the Lady Gaga concert, and Cameron is supposed to go with me but he's sick in bed and he's expecting me to stay home and take care of him.

"And so I kind of, maybe, drug him a little bit so I can sneak out and go to the concert."

Meanwhile, a forthcoming episode of Glee featuring the music of Lady Gaga has been extended by 30 minutes longer than the usual running time.

The 90-minute special episode will see members of the New Directions high school glee club perform Born This Way and learn a lesson about self-acceptance.
Network Fox announced: "In the Born This Way episode, Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) teaches the glee club a valuable lesson about self-acceptance and embracing what makes you unique through the music of Lady Gaga."

Country Road Version of "Born This Way" Released to Benefit Charity

The country version of Lady Gaga's smash hit “Born This Way” has become such a viral sensation since being released through her Twitter page that she has decided to officially issue the track for sale today with a portion of the proceeds to benefit charity. The “Born This Way – Country Road Version”, produced by Lady Gaga and Fernando Garibay, was recently recorded while on tour and features new Lady Gaga vocals and added guitar and harmonica. First released March 24th as a gift to her fans (she has become the first person on Twitter with 9,000,000 followers), overwhelming praise for the recording--marked by over 1,000,000 YouTube views in it's first few days of release--has prompted Lady Gaga to release the track officially, with Lady Gaga, her record label, and her publisher donating a portion of the proceeds from sales of the track to benefit the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

The original version of “Born This Way” spent six consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, starting with its debut February 11th. The fastest song in history to reach sales of 1,000,000 copies, “Born This Way” is the first single and title track to Lady Gaga’s hotly anticipated upcoming third album, Born This Way, scheduled for release on May 23rd.
