Preview Six Songs From Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way'

by Matthew Perpetua in The Rolling Stone Blog
Lady Gaga gave Rolling Stone an advance preview of four songs from her upcoming album Born This Way an hour before the first show of the final leg of her Monster Ball tour in Atlantic City. Though Gaga's people were quick to point out that these were not the final mixes, the tracks certainly sounded like polished, finished recordings. Here's a track-by-track rundown of what we heard backstage, as well as what she played from the new record in concert.

"Judas" - Currently scheduled as the second single from the album, "Judas" is a classic Lady Gaga pop banger with three huge hooks, a thumping house music breakdown and a vocal part that borrows a bit of Rihanna's distinctive cadence. Gaga has written about falling for the wrong guy before in "LoveGame" and "Bad Romance," but this time around she's a bit less dark and dramatic. There's a bubbly sweetness in her voice as she sings "I'm just a holy fool / baby it's so cool / I'm still in love with Judas, baby."

"Edge of Glory" - This one sounds crazy in print -- it's a massive power ballad with heavy club beats that features Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band wailing on his saxophone -- but somehow it all seems totally natural when you actually hear it. There's an element of cheesiness to it, but it's totally captivating and incredibly catchy. If any of these new Gaga tunes demands to be a big fat hit, this is it. The inclusion of Clemons is an inspired touch that amplifies the song's Eighties stadium rock vibe, but his actual performance is amazing and ranks among the best of his career.

"Scheiße" - A remixed version of this number was used in a recent runway show by fashion designer Thierry Mugler. The album version doesn't have the same hardcore European house flavor, but it's definitely the tune most likely to bring back memories of early-Nineties dance crossover hits by C&C Music Factory, Snap and RuPaul. The opening of the song -- in which she flatly intones "I don't speak German, but I can if you like" -- is fierce, but the song is saved from being a slight novelty by a soaring chorus that vaguely recalls Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger."

"Hair" - "Hair" is another inspirational song in the mold of "Born This Way," but it's a bit weirder, mixing the yearning romantic melodrama of Pat Benetar's "We Belong" with the hard industrial metal edge of Broken-era Nine Inch Nails. The lyrics are essentially about embracing one's hairstyle as the ultimate expression of their identity, climaxing with Gaga triumphantly declaring "I am my hair!" in its huge sing along chorus. An anthem for hair salons everywhere.

"You and I"- Gaga didn't share the studio version of this theatrical rock ballad, but she did perform it in her concert later in the evening. This one has been part of her Monster Ball setlist for months now, and at this point it's already a crowd-pleasing showstopper. Assuming that the album recording will have more or less the same piano-centric arrangement, "You and I" will provide a necessary break from the high energy beats on the other tracks.

"Born This Way" - This is the Number One single in the country, so you've probably heard this one by now. This was the first time Gaga has played the song in concert, but it's already the ideal conclusion to her show, ending the night with a giddy communal celebration of personal empowerment and self-acceptance.

FIRST PHOTO: Lady Gaga Teams Up With E Street's Clarence Clemons

Lady Gaga just HAD TO HAVE Clarence Clemons work with her on her new album, and RadarOnline.com has the first picture of the two music greats together.

Clemons is famous for his collaborations with Bruce Springsteen as a member of the E Street Band and also has successful solo career.
He told Rolling Stone he received a telephone call on Friday January 28 at his Florida home from one of Gaga's producers saying she wanted him in the studio with her, right then.

Clemons grabbed the next flight out to New York and landed in the studio with Gaga just hours later.

"I play sax through the whole song and I have a solo," Clemons told Rolling Stone.

It was such a great experience, Clemons went on to say, he would have done it for free. Lady Gaga, he added, "she's the real deal."

Hair is on Gaga's much-anticipated Born This Way album, set for release May 23.

Lady Gaga Basks In Grammy Victory In This Week's 'Late Night Lineup'

by Kyle Anderson MTV
If you're anything like the MTV Newsroom staff, then the 53rd Grammy Awards kept you up until all hours on Sunday night (February 13). So now that you're already used to staying up past your bedtime, why not spend the rest of your week staying up late and watching talk shows? It's a good week for it, as there are some truly top-shelf guests hitting the studios this week — many of them fresh from their Grammy victories. For example, Lady Gaga will sit down and chat with Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" on Monday night (February 14), where she will no doubt discuss her much-talked-about egg-assisted entrance on the red carpet. Other guests on "The Tonight Show" this week include John Legend (Monday), Charles Barkley (Wednesday, February 16) and 30 Seconds to Mars (Friday, February 18).

Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' Off to Huge Sales & Radio Start

by Billboard staff report Hollywood Reporter
Interscope RecordsFresh from her Grammys performance, the singer's latest single looks likely to hit the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1.

After its first three days of availability, Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" rockets to a record-setting debut on Billboard's Pop Songs radio airplay chart and, thanks to exceptionally strong opening digital sales estimates, looks likely to storm the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1 when the latter list is released Wednesday (Feb. 16).

The first single and title track from the star's third studio album, due May 23, storms Pop Songs at No. 14 with 4,602 plays, according to Nielsen BDS, the highest detections total by a debuting title in the chart's 18-year history.

Additionally, sources say that "Born" shifted more than 450,000 downloads its first three days of release since Friday morning (11).

Its big sales start, plus jaw-dropping radio launch, sets up "Born"'s likely debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100. Not only would a No. 1 start represent just the Hot 100's 19th No. 1 opening, but, as previously reported, it would also mark the survey's 1,000th leader dating to its 1958 inception.

A bow of 450,000 downloads would secure Lady Gaga the biggest debut for a track by a woman, surpassing Britney Spears' bow with "Hold It Against Me" four weeks ago (411,000). If Gaga moves 450,000, it would also mark the fourth-largest debut among all digital tracks - a remarkable feat, considering the song had less than three full days of sales availability.

Lady Gaga 'Born This Way' Single Out Free with Target Pre-Order

by Jason Lipshutz, N.Y. Billboard News
Lady Gaga's quick Twitter announcement on Monday -- "Can't wait any longer, single coming Friday" -- was not a tease to her fans, as the pop star's new single, "Born This Way," is officially set to be released tomorrow (Feb. 11). Target has also announced a partnership with Gaga that will let fans download the single for free tomorrow by pre-ordering Gaga's sophomore album, "Born This Way," on the company's website.
In addition, Target will carry an exclusive deluxe edition of the album, out May 23, that will include three aditional songs and five remixes. Gaga fans can pre-order the album at Target.com/gaga beginning at 9 A.M. EST tomorrow, and the single will be available for free with the pre-order through Feb. 26.
"We're excited to be working with Target on the launch of 'Born This Way,'" says Steve Berman, vice chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, in a statement. "We always have a tremendously successful relationship when we get together on something like this. Target provides us with the perfect platform to really turn the spotlight on the incredible album that Lady Gaga has made."

Lady Gaga was originally set to unveil her highly anticipated next single on Sunday (Feb. 13), when she will perform the song at the Grammy Awards ceremony, but Monday's announcement on Twitter bumped up the release two days. Last month, the singer personally leaked the song's lyrics and credits on Twitter as a thank-you to her fans, and she posted the single artwork a day later.

DJ White Shadow, who is listed as the single's producer along with Gaga and Fernando Garibay, told Billboard.com last week that the song was recorded "around the world" and that it "sounds like it reads, but not like you think until you hear it."

Lady Gaga rallies her 'Aussie Little Monsters'

by Matt Akersten Same Same

Lady Gaga has used her Facebook page – where she has 28 million fans – to rally support for the latest Australian campaign for marriage equality.

“Come celebrate why you were Born This Way,” she commanded. “Little Aussie Monsters head down to Martin Place in Sydney at 8am or Chapel St in Melbourne at 9am on 14/2/11.”

Australian Marriage Equality campaigner Alex Greenwich says he’s thrilled with Lady Gaga’s support and is looking forward to seeing a big turnout of people in both cities on Monday morning for the launch of lobby group Get Up!’s new gay marriage campaign.
Channel 7 will be there in both cities on Monday morning filming the out and loud crowd as the new TV ad is revealed for the first time.

With the slogan Marriage Matters, the ad aims to put further pressure on the nation’s leaders to amend the Marriage Act to allow same-sex couples to legally wed.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga’s newest single Born This Way is set to be released globally on iTunes at 1am tonight AEDST. She tweeted the lyrics to the song late last month, proving that it’s a huge gay anthem – see the full lyrics here.

Carson Daly: Perez Hilton Gives AMP the Inside Scoop on Gaga's New Single.

By Sarah C AMP

We’ve been like giddy schoolgirls here at AMP Radio anxiously anticipating the release of the new Lady Gaga single, “Born This Way.” The song officially drops on Friday, but we can’t handle the wait anymore!
Luckily for us, our buddy Perez Hilton has already heard the track and he called into the morning show to give us his exclusive review!
Perez is close friends with Lady Gaga, so naturally he has heard her new material and he spilled the beans to Carson this morning: Listen here.

Being besties with Mother Monster herself, Perez may be a little biased, but he thinks true Gaga fans will love ”Born This Way:”
I think it’s amazing. Some people might’ve been concerned because of the lyrics. The lyrics were a little serious. “Born This Way” is what you would expect from Gaga. It’s a big dance/pop record, but it feels like growth. It feels like evolution and it feels very current.

Luc Carl Lands Book Deal for The Drunk Diet

Musician, party promoter, and bar manager Lüc Carl has inked a book deal with St. Martin’s Press for a book about how he lost weight while drinking heavily.

Executive editor Kathy Huck acquired the book, and it is set for a 2012 release. Carl has made headlines for the last few months as he reportedly rekindled his relationship with his girlfriend, Lady Gaga. He keeps a Twitter account with nearly 20,000 followers.
Here’s more about the book: “The Drunk Diet is Lüc’s groundbreaking memoir about how he was able to drop the weight, fine-tune his body, and still party every single night of the week … The Drunk Diet is much more than a lame series of ‘do this, don’t do that’ tips—it’s an awe-inspiring tale of an ordinary rock ‘n roll guy who managed to transform a lifestyle based around whiskey and 5:00 AM cheeseburgers into a wildly successful fitness regime.”

Gaga, Elton duet exclusive to film

If you want to hear Sir Elton John's latest duet with Lady Gaga, you'll have to buy a cinema ticket.

The soundtrack version of Hello Hello, the slow-tempo pop ditty written by Sir Elton and Bernie Taupin for the animated film Gnomeo & Juliet, only features Sir Elton, while the rendition including Lady Gaga is only in the film. A spokeswoman for Buena Vista Records confirmed the duet is only in the film and wouldn't be released on radio.
Sir Elton said in an interview that he asked Gaga to join him for the song last year after she performed at a charity benefit at his home. Their collaboration could end up on her upcoming album, Born This Way, though it's unlikely because the duo aren't labelmates. A spokesman for Interscope, Lady Gaga's label, declined to comment.

Lady Gaga is expected to perform the title track from Born This Way on February 13 at the Grammys, the same awards show where Sir Elton joined Lady Gaga last year for a mash-up of her Speechless and his Your Song. Sir Elton said he's heard Born This Way and called it "the song that will wipe I Will Survive off the map." Lady Gaga released the song's lyrics on Twitter last week.
